MAC honors BREC for 20 years of cooperation, support

Citing the longstanding cooperation and support of Mineral Area College by Black River Electric Cooperative, MAC’s Board of Trustees presented BREC with a plaque of appreciation during Mineral Area College’s Fourth Friday Luncheon held August 27, at BREC’s headquarters in Fredericktown.

Access to quality education is an important component to develop job skills and local leadership for rural residents.  Cooperatives like BREC are founded on local leadership and a commitment to the community.  Through that community commitment, students from throughout BREC’s service area are able to attend classes at MAC’s Fredericktown facility located on property made available by BREC.

SAFETY TIP

downedwires.jpg

Downed power lines

When severe weather hits or an accident occurs, power lines can come down. Remember to treat all downed wires as live and dangerous! Keep in mind the potentially deadly threat of downed electric wires and other safety hazards.  If you see a downed power line call us immediately @ 1-800-392-4711.  If the line is on a road or public area also contact your local police so that they can divert traffic and keep the area clear until our crews can arrive.

Maintain a distance of at least 10 feet from downed or sagging wires and anything they are in contact with, including puddles of water, trees, fences, etc.   A power line that touches the ground can shock or kill you even if you do not touch it. The electrical current can travel through the ground and into your body.

Keep children and family pets away from areas where lines may have fallen (backyards, fields, school yards, etc.)

Don't drive over downed power lines. Even if they are not energized, the lines could get entangled in your vehicle, causing further damage or injury.

Before removing tree debris, carefully check the debris and surrounding ground for downed wires. Look overhead for dangling or low power lines.
